Move Consulting was commissioned by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) to identify a proof of concept for the key behaviours, tools, and resources required to support effective practice in delivering strength messaging, guidance, and support for patients.
The Challenge
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy recognised an opportunity to strengthen how physiotherapy professionals promote and support strength-based activity as part of treatment and ongoing health management.
While many physiotherapists already provide exercise guidance, there was a need to better understand the behaviours, motivations, and enablers that underpin effective strength messaging — ensuring consistent, evidence-based support for patients across services.
To address this, CSP commissioned Move Consulting to explore real-world behaviours within physiotherapy practice, and identify the tools, training, and systems needed to embed strength messaging more consistently.
Our Approach
We undertook a structured analysis of physiotherapy staff behaviours related to providing strength guidance and advice — exploring the capabilities, opportunities, and motivations that shape current practice.
Our team applied a behavioural science lens to understand how physiotherapists currently support patients to engage in strengthening activities, and where further support could help them enhance confidence, consistency, and impact.
We worked closely with CSP members through a combination of interactive workshops, online forums, and surveys, engaging physiotherapists across settings to capture a broad and representative picture of practice.

Project Impact
The findings from this project provided CSP with a clear evidence base and practical direction for advancing their national Strength Messaging Project.
Working to tight timescales, the Move Consulting team helped translate behavioural science into real-world application, equipping CSP with actionable insights and a strong foundation to design future interventions.
