We take pride in working with our clients to understand their needs and to create high quality products that make the difference they are looking for. Here is one example from our work with key clients, Our Parks.
Level 2 Coach Parker Qualification
Move Consulting Ltd support key clients Our Parks to shake up the route to becoming a fitness coach with industry leading qualification.
Founded in 2014 by fitness coach Born Barikor to harness the legacy of the London Olympics, Our Parks operates with the purpose of ensuring that easy, barrier free access to quality exercise is available to everyone, uniting communities through exercise.
Our Parks aim to improve the health and wellbeing of local communities by providing fun, free fitness-based activity. They help to maximise the use and benefits of amazing parks and open spaces, enhancing the interaction of local communities. Their offer is provided by a growing workforce of over 500 Coach Parkers - generally made up of qualified fitness professionals and coaches - who have transferred their skills from the gym floor into the park environment.
Founder and CEO of Our Parks, Born Barikor said,
“speaking to the Coach Parker workforce, we learned that there were some gaps appearing in terms of the challenges faced in delivering in the environments and to the audiences we wanted the programme to reach. The time for innovating within the qualifications market had been on the horizon for a while, and now was the time.”
“We secured funding from Sport England to expand the Our Parks programme into more communities across the UK. Striking up a partnership with BUCS - British Universities and College Sport – we wanted to not only make it easier to get active, but also to make it easier to be part of the Our Parks family, as a Coach Parker.”
“We heard that Move Consulting had recently set up and were making some positive noises in the physical activity space. After a few conversations with the team at Move, it was obvious to us that they had not only the expertise to design and develop the kind of qualification we wanted, but their passion, values and vision as an organisation really helped in deciding on them as our chosen provider.”
Move Consulting Ltd are a learning and development organisation with a specialist focus on physical activity and health related behaviour change. Founded in 2020, Move have a vision for the future where physical activity is part of the fabric of our society. Their mission is a simple one, to inspire more people to move.
Founder and Director at Move Consulting, Craig Blain said,
“We offer a wide range of services to organisations with ambitions to inspire more people to move, including programme design, workforce development and learning content design. We were happy to receive the call from Our Parks and Born. Listening to the plans for the expansion of the Our Parks programme we knew there was a lot we could do to support in the development of the qualification, but also to support in considerations for the wider programme development too.”
Work to develop the new Level 2 Coach Parker Qualification began in October 2020 - in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic. The innovative blended learning offer features four digital learning modules hosted on the UK Coaching learning and development platform, and a face-to-face element, making the learning accessible to more people, and reducing many of the challenges felt due to social restrictions. The innovation in qualification design is hoped to make the experience for learners more engaging and supportive.
“We worked closely with the client through the development of the qualification as well as calling upon a number of key contacts”, Craig shared.
“Utilising the latest Professional Standards for the sector (Sport and Physical Activity) we decided upon a hybrid of skills, knowledge and behaviours seen in fitness professionals, community coaches and physical activity practitioners. This is something we believe will meet the needs of the client and prove to be a great success in diversifying the audience the qualification will attract.”
“Collaboration and co-design are a core part of our approach in the development of our products and services. We wanted to make sure that the design of the learning as well as the content itself was grounded in practice, so co-designing elements with the prospective market was key.”
The eLearning modules were developed with award winning eLearning provider, Everything eLearning Ltd, who worked with Move and a user testing group to complete a number of planned tests and design iterations, gaining essential feedback on the content, and learning design to ensure the final product is well received.
eLearning Director from Everything eLearning, Gary Baldock said,
“The project was great to work on. The Team at Move Consulting provided everything we needed in terms of high-quality content and a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve. Understanding that the client (Our Parks) wanted to push the boundaries with the project was an exciting prospect. The team at Move gave us a clear directive with the flexibility to test out some new concepts, which was exactly what we needed to create something stand out. We hope the learners benefit from the level of interaction we have placed within the eLearning modules.”
The content and eLearning modules are designed to provide bitesize steps, each step comes with a digital knowledge check which aims to provide a handrail for learners. These checkpoints throughout the qualification help to evidence learners understanding of the foundations of each module, before building upon it.
This design feature was developed in mind of the potential for a semi-automated qualification pathway, in which learners are able to evidence competency in the more heavily theory-based elements of the qualification, allowing for the face-to-face elements to be highly practical based.
Outside of the specific course content in the eLearning modules, the continued learning journey for Trainee Coach Parkers was also a keep part of the thinking for the team at Move. Understanding how to help to provide a legacy of support beyond the qualification was important.
This is where project partner UK Coaching play a key role;
Emma Atkins, Director of Coaching for the UK Coaching group, which includes 1st4sport qualifications said:
“We are delighted to be collaborating with Our Parks to offer long term support and expertise for their amazing workforce of Coach Parkers. UK Coaching want to encourage and support all coaches to commit to learning as a lifelong habit. Through continually listening to coaches, our learning and development platform provides a wide range of content developed to support their needs, providing what they want in a way that works for them. Find more at www.ukcoaching.org.uk"
Moving on from the eLearning modules, learners are welcomed to an Our Parks Training Centre. Here they will be able to continue their learning journey in a supportive environment, thanks to the programme partnership with BUCS and UK Coaching, who will support facilitating delivery of the Our Parks qualification through their recognised centre model, allowing universities to quickly mobilise and reach their students and local communities with the qualification.
“It’s been great to use all the assets available to us to support this programme. It’s a challenging time for the sector right now and having the opportunity to come together on collaborations like this is inspiring. Creating an offer which is inclusive and enables more people to engage in coaching is great. We want to help develop the next generation of coaches, who will inspire the nation to move.”
The Level 2 Coach Parker qualification is due to launch in late spring 2021. For the latest updates on the launch tune into the Our Parks social media channels.
